In addition to being known as the Land of Fire and Ice, Iceland is also known as the land of the Midnight Sun. Iceland’s Midnight Sun should be on every traveler’s bucket list as it is something that everyone needs to experience at least once in a lifetime. You’re probably wondering where the best places are to experience it. Or when you should go to Iceland to see it at its height. And you’re probably wondering how on Earth do people sleep when there’s no darkness? Let’s talk about these questions and more as we delve into the topic of Iceland’s Midnight Sun.

What causes the Midnight Sun?

Okay kiddies, it’s time for a little science refresher. As we all learned back in school, the Earth tilts on an axis. As our planet makes its yearly journey around the Sun, this 23-degree tilt causes what we perceive as seasons. While our brothers and sisters close to the equator experience warm weather and a pretty equal day/night division throughout the year, the opposite is true for those of us closer to the poles. Because Iceland is so close to the North Pole and the Arctic Circle, the days are very long in the summer and very short in the winter.

What are the best times and place see the Midnight in Iceland?

You can experience light at midnight from May to August. You’ll find Iceland’s Midnight Sun at its peak around June 21st, which is the summer solstice. The farther north you go, the better. One of the best places to truly have 24-hour sunshine is Grímsey island. The Arctic Circle crosses this tiny island, which lies just off the north coast of Iceland. You can also see the Midnight Sun in other Scandinavian countries such as Sweden, Norway, Finland, Greenland as well as Russia and Alaska in the United States.

What are some activities to do during the Midnight Sun?

I think the better question is, what CAN’T you do during the Midnight Sun? Besides sleep, that is. Having all those extra daylight hours affords you the possibility of fitting in an extra excursion, taking in a longer hiking route and much more. While heading out to bars and clubs during what feels like the middle of the day might seem a little strange, you can also use this as a chance to experience Rekjavik’s legendary nightlife.

How does anyone get to sleep?

Good question. Fortunately, Icelanders have had over a thousand years to figure this one out. Most places where you choose to stay will have blackout curtains. This also includes Airbnb rentals as Icelanders need their sleep too. As with anything, be sure to double-check before you make your booking. It also never hurts to invest in a quality sleep mask and a good pair of earplugs when you travel, whether you’re driving, renting a motorhome or camping, and Iceland is no exception.
