Although winter in Iceland is not as tough as many make it out to be, it is still a difficult season. Not only is it cold and windy, but road conditions are also not ideal. This makes the situation difficult for many campsites in Iceland. Getting certain supplies or maintaining facilities can be hard work. Also, many campsites in Iceland are far away in the highlands. Roads to these areas are basically closed during the winter time.

None of this stops many campers from coming to Iceland in winter. We don’t blame them! It is a magical time of the year in our country. For those who wish to experience this season, we have an updated selection of campsites open all year in Iceland:

The Reykjavik Campsite

We have a whole post about this one. As it is so close to the city center (only 3 km or 1.7 mi away) many travelers can use it as starting point or end point for their trip. This campsite is a special one among campsites in Iceland in that they have an eco-friendly philosophy. Everything they do in their facilities aim to provide the best services but taking care of the environment. We listed it first on our list of campsites open all year in Iceland because of their commitment to the planet.

Something that we love about this campground is their culture of recycling. When travelers depart to keep on their trip or go back home, they leave what they no longer need. This way, other travelers can take advantage of it and save some bucks!

The Hamragarðar Campsite

And from the south of Iceland, let’s to the west of the island.

This campsite is just 2km (1.2 mi) away from the Ring Road, so it’s quite easy to reach. It’s got two beautiful waterfalls close by and is a very pretty campground. Nature is breathtaking and is everywhere on this special site.  This is also a great place to stay because they have great facilities. You’ll find waste disposal for motorhomes, hot and cold water, electricity, and showers.

The Lifsmotun Campsite:

Let’s continue our clockwise journey around Iceland. Now we’re heading north!

This campsite is a farm in the middle of a valley. It has beautiful wooden cabins, a river close by and a little town. In the town, you can find restaurants, a swimming pool, and a shopping area. Lake Mývatn is only 35 km (22 mi) and Húsavík is 40 km (25 mi) away. An added bonus is that at this campsite, each camper has their own separate area.
